Docling alternative
Docling is an MIT-licensed document converter that began at IBM Research and now lives under the LF AI & Data Foundation. You install and run it yourself. AnyToMarkdown is hosted: you call an API. Which one fits depends on where you want to run things.

Choose Docling if…
- Your data must stay on your own machines.
- You need audio, video or other inputs beyond documents, or its JSON and DocTags outputs.
- You have the compute and want free software; you don't mind running it, or its
docling-serveAPI, yourself.
Choose AnyToMarkdown if…
- You want no infrastructure: no Python environment, model downloads or servers to keep running.
- You want pay-as-you-go pricing and a free tier rather than owning the compute.
- You want URL fetching, e-mail and e-book support, RAG chunks, token counts and a hosted MCP endpoint in the same call.

Try it on your own files
The fastest comparison is your own documents. Drop one into the free converter (no sign-up), then look at the headings, tables and lists. If it handles your files, the API is the same engine in one call.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a hosted version of Docling?
The Docling project provides docling-serve, which you deploy yourself. AnyToMarkdown is a separate, hosted API that you call over HTTP.
Is AnyToMarkdown as accurate as Docling?
Docling is built around AI models for layout and tables, which can do better on very complex documents. AnyToMarkdown uses rule-based layout analysis, which is faster and lighter and works well on common documents. Try your own files in the free converter and compare.
Can I self-host AnyToMarkdown?
