What the Word converter keeps

Word vs Markdown: what changes

Markdown has no page size, fonts or colors, so those are dropped. Everything that carries meaning is mapped to Markdown syntax: heading styles to # levels, list numbering to 1., tables to pipe tables and footnotes to reference-style notes. The result reads well as plain text and renders correctly on GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, Notion imports and documentation sites.

For legacy .doc files (Word 97-2003) the text, headings, lists and tables are extracted as well; complex layouts convert most reliably from .docx.

The converter outputs the current text of the document. Comments and revision marks are not included.
