URL to Markdown

Paste a link and get the page's main content as clean Markdown, ready for ChatGPT, Claude or a RAG index. Menus, ads, cookie banners and footers are removed; links, tables and code blocks are kept.

  • Main article only
  • Absolute links
  • Title, author, date
  • PDF & DOCX links too

Web pages are reduced to the main article: menus, cookie banners and footers are removed. Public Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Dropbox and GitHub links work too.

What the URL converter keeps

  • Main content: readability-style extraction keeps the article and drops navigation, sidebars, banners and footers.
  • Links: rewritten as absolute URLs, so they still work outside the page.
  • Code blocks: with their language, plus tables, lists and images.
  • Metadata: title, author, published date, site name and OpenGraph data (in the API's JSON response).
  • Documents: links to PDF, DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files are downloaded and converted too.
  • Share links: Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Dropbox and GitHub links are turned into direct downloads.

Example output

A blog page with a nav bar, a cookie notice, the article and a footer. Converted from its URL:

# How Rate Limits Work

Rate limits protect APIs from overload. Most providers return HTTP `429 Too Many Requests` when the limit is exceeded, along with a `Retry-After` header.

## Token bucket

The token bucket algorithm refills tokens at a fixed rate. Each request consumes a token; when the bucket is empty, requests are rejected.

```csharp
var limiter = new TokenBucketRateLimiter(options);
```

## Best practices

- Use exponential backoff
- Cache responses
- Read the [limits documentation](https://blog.example.com/docs/limits)

URL to Markdown API

GET /v1/convert/raw?url=... returns the Markdown. Use /v1/convert for JSON with the title, author, date and optional RAG chunks. Results for the same URL are cached for 5 minutes.

Web pages for LLMs and agents

Raw HTML is mostly markup: a typical article page is 80-95% navigation, scripts and styling. Feeding that to an LLM wastes tokens and confuses the model. Extracting the main content and converting it to Markdown keeps what matters and often cuts the token count by more than ten times. AI agents can use the same conversion through the MCP server.

Only public pages can be converted. Pages behind a login, and pages that only render their content with JavaScript, may come back empty or partial.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a web page to Markdown?

Paste the URL into the box above and click Convert. The main article is extracted and converted to Markdown.

Does it work with JavaScript-heavy sites?

It reads the HTML the server sends. Most news sites, blogs and docs work; single-page apps that only render in the browser may come back partial.

Can I convert a PDF or Word file by URL?

Yes. Links to PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other supported files are downloaded and converted.

Can it read pages behind a login?

No. Only public addresses are fetched, and private network addresses are blocked.

How do I get the whole page instead of the article?

With the API, set mainContentOnly=false.
